About Ratteries in Winnipeg?

Previous Entry Ratteries in Winnipeg? Apr. 2nd, 2009 @ 01:31 pm Next Entry
Hey there. I'm looking into getting a pet rat, or maybe a pair because I've heard they do best that way because they're so social. It wouldn't be until the fall, because I have a pretty busy summer ahead of me and wouldn't want to get pets just to be unable to give them the proper amount of attention. Also, then I can save up an emergency fund in case my little buddies have any health problems. That said, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to ratteries in Winnipeg? Are there any? Which are the best? My research has been saying that I shouldn't get one from a major pet store, like Petland, 'cause they aren't always careful with the lines of breeding and you can get a biter, pregnant rat, etc. Obviously I'm not saying if I got a biter I wouldn't keep it, no pet will be perfect, but if I can avoid it I'd like to. So, sorry for the convoluted post, and sorry if this has been asked before, I only just added this community today, but any good places to get a rat here? Also, I'll be getting a couple of books so I can read up on proper care and training in advance as well, any recommendations? Thanks for any help!

I don't have any ideas of places to go but I do know who to avoid. From my understanding all the Winnipeg pet stores, except for Petcetera, get their rats from the same questionable breeder.

Not to say that the Petcetera breeders are any better, their breeders just aren't out in plain sight like the Petland one.

Winnipeg Rats

I also did not want to buy from the Brandon breeder (pet store rats) so I put a wanted ad in kijiji and a guy named Shawn contacted me (so did a reptile store but I wasn't happy with how they kept the rats, who were really feeders but they would sell them). I did buy 2 from Shawn but got their later and there were only 3 to pick from, the biter, the runt, and the 1 with the gunky eye. I took the biter (who still bites me!!) and the sweet lil runt. Good luck. I also recommend joining RatShack online.

Two of my female rats are from a Petland in Winnipeg. I got them a year ago and they are my most social and "intelligent" (seems like it) rats which were obviously socialized when they were young. (One of them even started walking on me and grooming me on the very second day I had her and she has always been so sweet since then) I have visited this same store a few times recently and the (especially female) rats are not at all like before. They seem very scared and skittish and it's extremely hard to pickone up without a struggle... I have been looking for ratteries too but I don't know where to go. I have been thinking about breeding my own female rattie with one of my well tempered males but I would have to be sure someone would want to buy some of the babies.
---Another thing is, you can pretty much tell who is a "biter" BEFORE you buy the rat. You should spend some time before buying to see how sociable the rat is or what it's behavior is generally like around humans.
